Continuing Education Requirements in New York
NYS Department of State, Division of Licensing Services
Real estate licensees are required to successfully complete 22½ hours of Department of State approved continuing education every two years within their license renewal period, prior to renewal. Effective for renewals after July 1, 2008, the 22½ hours must include at least 3 hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property.
Any salesperson who successfully completes an approved broker qualifying course (which requires passing the final exam) will receive 19½ hours credit for continuing education for their current two-year sales license renewal period. As well, applicants for licensure as a real estate broker who successfully completed the 45 hour salesperson qualifying course prior to July 1, 2008, may take a 30 hour supplemental course which, if successfully completed, may be used by said applicant in conjunction with the 45 hour salesperson qualifying course towards satisfying the salesperson educational requirements for licensure as a real estate broker. Such persons may receive 19½ hours of continuing education credit for successfully completing the supplemental course. In either case, such persons must still take 3 hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property, in order to satisfy the 22½ hour continuing education requirement for their current two-year renewal period.
Proof of Course Completion
Upon course completion, real estate licensees will be required to sign and date a statement (available on-line for printing only upon successful course completion) that they have personally completed each module of the learning program. Upon receipt of your signed statement, CE Network will submit a record of your course completion to the Division of Licensing Services for the State of New York. We will also forward you a Certificate of Completion within three weeks.
The following licensees are exempt from this education requirement:
- Attorneys admitted to the New York State bar who hold a real estate broker license.
- Any licensed real estate broker who is engaged full time in the real estate business and who has been consecutively licensed for at least 15 years prior to July 1, 2008. Any broker who did not qualify for this exemption by July 1, 2008, will no longer be eligible for exemption. Furthermore, any currently exempt broker who has a break in licensure will lose their exemption and will no longer be eligible.
